Die Stürme rufen Dich // The storms call you

Lady Godiva.jpg

The album cover features a John Collier painting of the Lady Godiva.

Guitarist Maik Weichert describes it as „Sinnbild für den Kampf um soziale Gerechtigkeit“ (“a symbol representing the fight for social justice”).

If you read up on the legend, it will all make sense.

This song caught my interest because it has German passages along with plenty of English ones.

Note: The line “This is the awaking – Es ist die Zeit des Erwachens!” basically features the same sentence in English and German, but it’s still slightly different. Translated and read one after the other it’s a bit weird, but yeah.

Die Stürme rufen Dich
Die Stürme rufen Dich
Die Stürme rufen Dich

The storms call you
The storms call you
The storms call you

Until the day I die, I will not end this fight.
Believe me, that I am this haunted man forever,
Their hopeful eyes, their desperate cries,
This certitude to shatter dying dreams forever

You can wait for brighter days to come, but this time is your time.
Your words, your deeds will soon cease to matter
The storms call you, here and now it has to happen
You hear the bells chime
And no fear will reign us

An unseen genocide, a world war on the enslaved ones
Shieldless, facing despotism,
This is the awaking – Es ist die Zeit des Erwachens!

An unseen genocide, a world war on the enslaved ones
Shieldless, facing despotism,
This is the awaking – This is the time of the awakening!

Right here right now, within the walls of Babylon
Die Stürme rufen Dich
I stand and fight, deny your lies forever
Die Stürme rufen Dich

Right here right now, within the walls of Babylon
The storms call you
I stand and fight, deny your lies forever
The storms call you

Forced by Northern Kingdoms, looted and held down
Despoiled and patronized just like conquered colonies
Old men return to reason, as power is taken by their rival sons

Du kannst auf bessere Tage warten, doch diese Zeit ist Deine Zeit
Und Du wirst die Fackel tragen, Feuer und Flamme für diese alte Welt

You can wait for brighter days to come, but this time is your time
And you will carry the torch, fire and flame for this old world

Right here right now, within the walls of Babylon
I stand and fight, deny your lies forever
Die Stürme rufen Dich
Die Völker rufen Dich

Right here right now, within the walls of Babylon
I stand and fight, deny your lies forever
The storms call you
The peoples call you

Right here right now, within the walls of Babylon
I stand and fight, deny your lies forever
Die Stürme rufen Dich

Right here right now, within the walls of Babylon
I stand and fight, deny your lies forever
The storms call you

The booklet also cites one of Víctor Jara‘s songs, as this song is a  homage to him, and features a German translation. I just translated that one into English:

Vientos del pueblo me llaman
Vientos del pueblo me llevan
Me esparcen el corazón
Y me avientan la garganta.

Stürme des Volkes rufen mich,
Stürme des Volkes tragen mich,
Erweitern mein Herz
Und füllen meine Kehle mit Luft.

The people’s storms call me,
The people’s storms carry me,
Widen my heart
And fill my throat with air.

Víctor Jara
